I enjoyed this book the first time I read it, but I was too young and so I didn't start loving it for awhile because of my contempt for Archer, and the consequent questioning of why Ellen would have fallen in love with him.

Those things get clearer with age, and with a little T.S. Eliot; if I ever had to teach this book it would be in conjunction with "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock".
