If I ever have a pet cat, I'll be naming it Merrikat. :) I can definitely see the parallels between the riots in Tale of Two Cities (that's one Dickens novel I love!) and this one. I've read The Haunting of Hill House, and I don't think it even comes close to the magic of this one, although I know a lot of readers disagree. Jackson just captured Merrikat's voice so perfectly I almost can't stand it. I loved this one too, as you know! If I ever have a pet cat, I’ll be naming it Merrikat. :)
